Etta now says it was a joke…. uh huh.
Singer Etta James says she was only trying to get a laugh when she said she “can’t stand†Beyoncé and made fun of President Obama’s ears during a concert in Seattle.
James told the Daily News Thursday she meant no harm when she poked fun at the President and ripped Beyoncé for her performance of James’ hit “At Last†during the inauguration.
“I didn’t really mean anything,†James said. “Even as a little child, I’ve always had that comedian kind of attitude. … That’s probably what went into it.â€
Still, James acknowledged being miffed she wasn’t invited to perform her signature song for Obama’s first dance with his wife on inauguration night.
James said she was “feeling left out of something that was basically mine, that I had done every time you look around.â€
She said she liked Beyoncé’s performance, but when asked if she thought she could have done better, James answered, “I think so. That’s a shame to say that.â€
James made the controversial comments before performing the song at a concert in Seattle last week. She began by saying of Obama, “You know your President, right? You know the one with the big ears?â€
She went on to say about Beyoncé, “I tell you that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she gonna get her ass whupped.â€
James said Thursday she kept the insults rolling only because the crowd was laughing so hard, a reaction that can be heard on a recording.
“Nobody was getting mad at me in Seattle,†she said. “They were all laughing, and it was funny.â€
She said the jokes were “not from a vicious place.â€
James pointed out that she posed for a picture and spoke with Beyoncé last year before the premiere of “Cadillac Records,†in which the young singer portrays the 71-year-old legend.
As for Obama, James said she “always thought he was handsome and he was cool.â€
“I still had my joke about him,†she said. “That might be horrible. The President might not ever like me in life.â€
She questioned how upset Obama could possibly be about the barb: “He’s got other stuff [to worry about] besides Etta James.â€
Come Etta… Don’t back down now…We all know that you meant that shit! You once was a legend, now B is and you can’t handle that…
Previous: At Last…. Etta speaks on Beyonce!

TMZ is reporting…
71-year-old Etta James actually threatened to beat the crap out of Beyonce Knowles — and it’s caught all on tape!
The war is all over Etta’s song, “At Last ” — Beyonce sang the tune at Obama’s 1st Inauguration Ball on Jan. 20th … but last week at a concert in Seattle, James was still pissed.
While on stage, Etta told the crowd, “Your President, the one with the big ears … he had that woman singing my song. She gone get her ass whipped.”
She continued, “The great Beyonce … I can’t stand Beyonce.”
Ironically Etta didn’t kick up this sorta fuss when Beyoncé portrayed her in “Cadillac Records.”

Beyonce Knowles has donated her entire salary from her new movie ‘Cadillac Records’ to a string of drug rehabilitation centers across U.S.
The move came after the singer spent two weeks with hardcore junkies to research for her latest role of singer Etta James, whose early career was blighted by heroin addiction, reports the Daily Star.
Knowles visited New York’s Phoenix House for the research and was moved to tears as she watched down-at-heel drug abusers go through detox misery after hitting rock bottom at the Phoenix House centre in Brooklyn, New York.
She was so moved by the work of Phoenix House staff – who treat 5,000 addicts a day in the US – that she pledged every penny of her pay check to helping them.
Karen Sodomick, marketing chief of the Phoenix House chain, confirmed Beyonce had given the ‘overwhelmingly generous’ gift.
However, she said: “Beyonce wants to remain a quiet supporter.â€
Jay-Z might have made an honest woman out of Beyoncé in 2008, but the Golden Globe-nominated singer/actress wasn’t going to let some splashy wedding steal her spotlight. With Sasha Fierce alive and well as the singer’s alter ego, and her song “Once in a Lifetime” from the movie “Cadillac Records” up for a Golden Globe, Beyoncé proved that she certainly was fierce in ’08. Adrien Brody was sad when Beyonce sang to him. The actor stars alongside the singer in ‘Cadillac Records’ and says he enjoyed working with her so much, he was overwhelmed when they did their final scenes together.
He said: “Beyonce was remarkable and very emotionally open. We went through some tough stuff. There’s one scene where she sings ‘At Last’ directly to me. It was a strange moment that made me sad because it was her last day of filming. (more…)

They costar in the new film Cadillac Records, but Gabrielle Union and Beyoncé go way back.
“I’ve known her since she was a teenager!” Union told PEOPLE at Ideal Bite’s “Best in Green” Awards on Thursday. “It’s been nice to see that her music and her lifestyle choices and her acting choices have all evolved as she’s gotten older.” (more…)
