Beyonce shines, a world away from scandal

Beyonce Live from the Rod Laver Arena, September 15 and 16 in Melbourne, Australia.

With Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri seated behind the mixing desk on the floor of Rod Laver Arena, there was concern prior to Beyonce Knowles’ blazing show last night that the Hollywood actress would steal the show.

That issue was put to bed within seconds, as the pop dynamo, dressed in a sparkling leotard opened with her best track, Crazy In Love.

Just 24 hours prior to the performance Beyonce was literally half the world away, in New York, embroiled in one of pop music’s biggest scandals of the year.

The scandal, involving an abrasive Kanye West defending her at the MTV Awards, has been a huge talking point online.

That she arrived in Melbourne yesterday afternoon before delivering an energetic performance a few hours later is a tribute to the leggy 28-year-old’s professionalism.

Playing the first of two nights in front of 12,000 fans at the venue, she was backed by an all-female band comprising three back-up singers, two drummers, keyboardists, guitarist and a horn section. Yet she outshone them all with her booming vocals and head-spinning array of costume changes, video montages and acrobatic – and suggestive – stage moves.

The show was dramatic and ballad-heavy following the fervent opening, with Beyonce playing the fantasy role of teenage princess.

Most of her solo hits were comfortably accounted for, including the superb R’n'B ballads If I Were a Boy and Irreplaceable, as well as the cheerleader-inspired Single Ladies (itself a global, viral hit). Musical interludes from the likes of Sarah McLachlan, the White Stripes and Alanis Morissette were spliced through most hits, hinting at the musical dexterity of the band.

An impressive, if occasionally garish, pop spectacular.
